Project Description
New to the Okanagan, our clients had purchased a home they loved, but the backyard fell far short of their vision. The space consisted of a steep, uneven slope overgrown with weeds and debris, with a winding gravel pathway that traversed the hillside to manage the grade. While the landscape was unusable in its existing state, the clients recognized its tremendous potential.
Working closely with the homeowners, our design team developed a landscape that transformed the challenging terrain into a series of functional outdoor living spaces. Their vision was simple—to create a backyard where they could entertain family and friends, relax in privacy, and incorporate a swimming pool as the centrepiece of the design.
By embracing the site's natural topography, we introduced multiple terraced levels supported by retaining walls, creating accessible and purposeful spaces throughout the property. The design includes a pool terrace, an expansive patio for entertaining, a dedicated area for Angus (the family dog) and a custom waterfall feature that enhances the atmosphere with the soothing sound of moving water while providing a sense of privacy and connection to nature.
Completed in just seven weeks, the project required careful planning and coordination. With access limited to a single-entry point, every stage of construction—from material deliveries to installation sequencing—was meticulously organized to maximize efficiency. More than 130 tonnes of structural fill were imported to reshape the landscape, converting a steep, unusable backyard into a welcoming outdoor retreat.
The finished landscape is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can unlock the hidden potential of a challenging site, creating a beautiful, functional extension of the home that will be enjoyed for years to come.
"Coming to Kelowna new, we chose Synergy because their site showed real neighbourhood examples. From day one, Shannon was engaged and professional. They delivered detailed proposals, stayed flexible when we asked for adjustments, and managed the whole renovation with remarkable attention to detail: daily cleanup, respectful crew, management site visits twice weekly. We knew it would be a challenging project, but the final, overall result went above and beyond our expectations. We are more than thrilled to have family and friends visit and enjoy our wonderful property as much as we do."
